Phone Says “Storage Full”? How to Free Up Space Without Losing Photos
Few phone messages are more annoying than “Storage Almost Full,” especially when it pops up just as you’re trying to take a picture. The good news is that you can usually clear space in a few minutes, and you don’t have to lose anything you care about. The key is doing it in the right order.
Why Your Phone Fills Up
The biggest space hogs are almost always photos and videos, especially videos. After that come apps (and the data they store), pictures and videos sent in text messages, and old downloads you forgot about.
Step 1: See What’s Using the Space
Before deleting anything, look at what’s actually taking up room.
On an iPhone: open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage. You’ll see a list of apps sorted by size, plus some suggestions.
On an Android phone: open Settings and tap Storage. On some phones it’s under Battery and device care. Many Android phones also have an app called Files by Google, which has a Clean tab that suggests what you can remove.
Step 2: Back Up Before You Delete
This is the step that keeps your memories safe. Before you delete any photos from the phone, check that they’re saved somewhere else, like iCloud or Google Photos.
Once they’re backed up, you can let your phone do the heavy lifting:
On an iPhone, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage in your iCloud Photos settings. Your phone keeps smaller copies and stores the full size versions in iCloud.
In Google Photos, use the Free up space option, which removes copies from your phone that are already safely backed up.
One thing to check: backing up only works if your cloud account has room. If your iCloud or Google storage is also full, new photos may not be saving at all.
Step 3: Clear the Easy Wins
Delete apps you no longer use. On an iPhone, Offload Unused Apps removes the app but keeps your information.
Remove large videos you don’t need, such as duplicates or old clips.
Empty the Recently Deleted album. On an iPhone, deleted photos stay there for a while and still use space until you clear them. Open the Photos app, scroll down in Albums, tap Recently Deleted, then select and delete.
Review big message attachments. Your phone’s storage screen may offer to show large photos and videos sent in texts.
Things To Skip
Don’t tap “Your storage is full, tap to clean” pop-ups or ads. These are often scams or junk apps. Check your storage in Settings yourself.
Don’t delete things you don’t recognize if you aren’t sure what they are.
Don’t reset your phone just to free up space. You almost never need to.
If It’s Still Full
If you’ve cleared the easy things and the phone is still full, it may simply be time for more cloud storage, which usually costs a few dollars a month, or for moving older photos to a computer. Neither is an emergency.
If you’d like someone beside you while you do this, a Kendera Global session can check that your photos are really backed up and then clear space together with you, step by step.
