How to Stop Annoying Notifications Without Missing What Matters

If your phone buzzes constantly, you're not imagining it. Most phones come set up to notify you about everything by default, every app, every update, every reminder. The good news is you can take back control in just a few minutes, and still never miss a call from someone who matters.

Why This Happens

When you first set up a phone or download an app, it often asks "allow notifications?" and it's easy to tap yes without thinking. Over time, those small yeses add up to dozens of interruptions a day.

On an iPhone

Open Settings, tap Notifications, and you'll see a full list of every app that can notify you. Tap on any app you want to quiet down, like a game or shopping app, and turn its notifications off, or switch it to a quieter style that doesn't show on your lock screen.

On an Android Phone

Open Settings, tap Notifications (sometimes called Apps & Notifications), and you'll see a similar list. Tap any app to turn off its notifications or adjust how it alerts you.

Keep the Ones That Matter

You don't have to turn everything off. Calls, texts, and messaging apps you use to stay in touch with family are usually worth keeping on. The goal isn't silence, it's quiet. A good rule of thumb: if an app notifying you doesn't help you or someone you love, it's a good candidate to turn off.

A Simpler Option: Do Not Disturb

Both iPhones and Android phones also have a Do Not Disturb setting, which lets you silence everything except calls from certain people, perfect for a quiet evening without missing something urgent.

You're Allowed to Choose What Gets Your Attention

A phone that buzzes less isn't a phone that's broken, it's a phone that's set up the way you actually want it. If you'd like help going through your notification settings together, that's a quick, satisfying thing to tackle in a Digital Concierge session.
